A journey to explore the cradle of nomadic empires, just as riders did centuries ago! The Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, boasts historical sites from ancient nomadic empires like the Gokturks and the Mongols. Venture to Kharkhorum, once the capital of the Mongol Empire. During this cycling expedition, revel in the true freedom of the wild grasslands of Mongolia—cycling through lush valleys, mountains, and pristine rivers. This tour is suitable for both beginner and advanced cyclists. Biking through the northern part of the Khangai mountains poses a bit of a challenge, but the rest of the journey is less demanding. The leisurely pace of cycling allows you to immerse yourself in the nomadic lifestyle, savor breathtaking landscapes, and explore historical and captivating sights along the route. (Below are daily estimated cycling distances; you can cover 20-30 km each day. Before and after cycling, we will travel by car to the next tourist ger camps.)

Day 1

ARRIVAL IN ULAANBAATAR CITY

Engage in a guided city sightseeing tour to explore Ulaanbaatar's key attractions. In the evening, enjoy a captivating folklore concert, followed by a delightful dinner at one of the city's premier restaurants.

Day 2

Elsen Tasarkhai Sand Dune

Elsen Tasarkhai Sand Dune

Head west to explore the beautiful Elsen Tasarkhai sand dunes, surrounded by hills and a small forest near a river. Experience a unique combination of Mongolian mountains, forests, and Gobi-type landscapes. After setting down at ger camp, ride two-humped camels, visit a nomadic family, and hike over the hills. In the evening, enjoy stargazing away from the city lights.

Day 3

Tsetserleg Town

Tsetserleg Town

Continue driving to Tsetserleg, the capital town of Arkhangai province. Stay overnight at a tourist ger camp, have dinner in the ger camp’s restaurant, and check selected bikes for final adjustments and test rides.

Day 4

Tsenkher Hot Spring

Tsenkher Hot Spring

Our mountain biking guide will introduce the cycling trip and make thorough adjustments to the selected bikes. We'll begin our cycling journey to the Tsenkher hot springs, covering 25 km on a smooth and hard-packed dirt road. During the ride, we'll ascend three hills before descending to the Tsenkher hot spring. Once we reach the tourist ger camp, you can unwind in a pool filled with spring water. Additionally, you have the option to enjoy a relaxing body massage for a small additional fee.

Day 5

Tsagaan Sun Valley

Tsagaan Sun Valley

After a rejuvenating soak in the hot spring, we embark on a cycling journey to Tsagaan Sum (White Temple) valley, winding through picturesque mountains. In the initial kilometers, we conquer two small passes, reaching heights of 1,872 and 1,848 meters above sea level. We pedal steadily, ascending to the third pass at 2,030 meters above sea level around the 40 km mark. The final leg of our ride is a delightful 15 km downhill, leading us to our campsite nestled among the hills.

Orkhon Water Fall

Orkhon Water Fall

Climb up two passes. At the summit of the second pass, behold a breathtaking view of the Orkhon River Valley. Known as the cradle of nomadic cultures, the Orkhon Valley is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, boasting captivating landscapes and intriguing historical sites. Descend easily for approximately 33 km along the Orkhon Valley, taking a lunch break along the way. Upon reaching the riverbank, set up camp. From there, choose between a short drive or a walk to the Orkhon Waterfall, the largest waterfall in Mongolia, cascading from an imposing height of 20 meters and spanning approximately 10 meters in width.

On a delightful 42 km descent along the Orkhon River, where the natural surroundings provide a home to a significant number of nomadic families. This unique setting offers you abundant chances to learn and explore the lifestyles of local nomadic families. Immerse yourself in their culture by sampling their dairy foods and gaining insights into their daily lives

Day 8

Kharkhorin City

Kharkhorin City

The total distance for this cycling itinerary is only 33 km, with the first 10 km involving a challenging climb. Following that, we'll enjoy a leisurely ride through the scenic Orkhon Valley, leading us to our lunch spot. After the lunch, we'll head towards Kharkhorin, a newer town named after the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire.The original capital's site is nearby, though little remains after its destruction. In the 16th century, the ruins were repurposed for the construction of Erdene Zuu Monastery, which stands as the main attraction today. Although the complex faced extensive destruction during the Communist Purges of the 1930s, a few temples, along with surrounding walls and stupas, managed to survive.Kharkhorum held a rich multicultural history, serving as the hub of trade and the exchange of ideas along the Silk Road during the 13th century. Established by Chinggis Khan in 1220, it was completed under the reign of his second son and successor, Ugudei Khan, in 1235. After exploring this historically significant town, we'll spend the night at a tourist ger camp.

Khusuu Tsaidam

Khusuu Tsaidam

On a scenic cycling adventure along a 49 km paved route. Along the way, we'll enjoy a delightful lunch before concluding the cycling tour. Following this, we'll hop into the van and drive to explore the day's main highlight: the Khushuu Tsaidam Memorial Complex, featuring a Turkic-inscribed monument from the Turkic Empire. Afterward, we'll return to the ger camp for a relaxing drive and savor a delicious dinner at the main restaurant.

Day 10

Ugii Lake

Ugii Lake

Get back to cycling on dirt roads as you traverse a 24 km route through charming hilly steppes, ultimately arriving at the breathtaking Ugii Lake. Nestled amidst rolling hills, Ugii Lake is a freshwater haven, serving as a summer sanctuary for various migratory bird species and housing a variety of freshwater fish. Settle in at a local tourist ger camp, where you have the option to engage in additional activities such as hiking, horse riding, boat rentals, and fishing.

Back to UB city

Back to UB city

Drive back to Ulaanbaatar City after breakfast. Take a leisurely stroll through the city or visit a cashmere outlet.
